First Sony gave us Venom, then soon enough we’ll be getting Morbius and Kraven, now wait, that’s not all we’re getting. Enter Spider-Woman with Olivia Wilde on board as the director. Sony has been hard at work architecting their universe of Marvel Characters with many films under development including one that has yet to be disclosed as well as a Silk television series.
Move Over Spider-Man, It’s Spider-Woman’s Turn To Swing
Last year Deadline revealed that Olivia Wilde would develop and direct a Marvel film for Sony revolved around a female character. They also revealed that the film will be produced by Amy Pascal and written by Katie Silberman. Shortly afterward many media outlets speculated that this was indeed a Spider-Woman film.
According to TheIlluminerdi the rumors are true, Olivia Wilde’s movie is definitely Spider-Woman. They have confirmed that Spider-Woman will be none other than Jessica Drew, the original Spider-Woman herself.

According to their sources, the character will be abiding mainly by the source material, even integrating her memory loss into her story, even though in the comics this is tied to Hydra, which will likely not be the case in the film. What is interesting is that it looks like they are looking to cast a 25-35-year-old actress
Who Is Spider-Woman?
For those of you who are not familiar with Spider-Woman, there have been several characters who used that moniker including Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson.
Unlike Peter Parker Jessica Drew was not bitten by a radioactive spider, when she was young she was exposed to uranium for months and contracted an illness.
She was injected with an untested prototype serum composed of DNA from various spiders by her brilliant father in a desperate attempt to cure her. She was then sealed in a genetic accelerator, due to the serum needing to incubate, where her age was decelerated. Jessica awoke in the accelerator decades later and in the comics was only 17 years old.

When Jessica regained consciousness she discovered she developed many superhuman abilities ranging from wall-crawling, super strength, speed, stamina, durability, and numerous others including her signature venom blasts which are controlled discharges of bio-electricity.
Spider-Woman is not very well known by non-comic book fans so I’m glad for this opportunity for a new generation of fans to be introduced to her. I think there’s potential for Olivia Wilde’s Spider-Woman to be a success, there’ll likely be a nice balance between action, drama, and comedy. To be honest I’m not familiar with Olivia’s directorial work but if it’s anything like her acting I’m sure she’ll do great.
