Starring: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Pedro Pascal, Kirsten Wiig
Directed by: Patty Jenkins
Written by: Patty Jenkins (Story), Geoff Johns (Story), Dave Callahan (Screenplay)
Wonder Woman 1984 is the first of many movies from Warner Brothers to release in Theatres and on HBO MAX simultaneously. Gal Gadot reprises her role as Wonder Woman and the story explores her time in 1984 facing new threats such as Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) and Cheetah (Kirsten Wiig), we also see the return of Steve Trevor (Chris Pine).
Let me just get straight to the point and say this was a disastrously disappointing follow-up to its predecessor back in 2016.
The Woe That Is Wonder Woman 1984
There were two opening scenes, the first one was entertaining, and the second one was not so much but it was still fun to watch and had me smiling and chuckling a couple of times. Then unfortunately the rest of the film happened. As the movie progressed the story digressed, and a lot of time was wasted quite literally. Wonder Woman 1984 is two hours and thirty minutes long which it certainly does not need to be.

Approximately ninety minutes of this movie was not necessary, it seems like the writers realized they did not have enough material for the script so they decided to put whatever felt right for them to make up for the time but ended up getting carried away by a river of nonsense. The plot was weak, the storyline did not progress well and there were useless plot devices, no one can honestly say this film was well-written.
Wonder Woman 1984 Had No Saving Grace
I love Gal Gadot and the rest of the cast but it pains me to say none of them could have saved this movie, they had to work with what they got and what they got was not much. Diana and Steve were very boring most of the time and the villains, Max Lord and Cheetah were not compelling, they were very generic and had minuscule character development.
The action sequences were good, the quality wasn’t a problem, the problem was with quantity, there was less action here than in the previous film. The special effects and CGI were good but could not save the movie and I had a hard time taking Cheetah’s CGI seriously because it kept reminding me of that atrocious movie ‘Cats’.

The conclusion was underwhelming though I understand the conveyed message, it could have been executed so much better and it raises some questions regarding plotholes that I really hope they fix.
One Must Wonder If There’s Any Hope For This Wonder Woman Franchise
So just in case, you’re wondering, I am thoroughly disappointed. I had high hopes for Wonder Woman 1984 and all those hopes were shattered into a million pieces quite mercilessly. I’m incredibly confused and almost at a loss for words.
The first Wonder Woman film was very good and Patty Jenkins is a pretty decent director so what went wrong? This takes the movie trend of sequels not living up to the original to unfathomable heights. There is a third Wonder Woman film in development and I can not stress enough how much I hope that one will be better than Wonder Woman 1984, I’m giving that a chance and keeping my fingers crossed.
Do you have any plans to see Wonder Woman 1984 or do you think you’ll skip this one? For those who have seen the film, were you able to find any redeeming qualities?
