Gundam fans get ready to bear witness to the colossal titan that reigns supreme over all Mecha in Anime as it makes its way to the colossal titan of streaming, Netflix.
First Look At Concept Art
For now, the Gundam film has yet to be given a title or a release date for that matter, but we do have a first look at concept art. Legendary took to Twitter to release the first look from the film, which will stream exclusively on Netflix upon its release. Here we have this iron-clad behemoth emerging from fire with doom in its eyes and destruction all around. Judging by the looks of the concept art, it’s safe to say that the movie’s sticking relatively close to the source material’s original design, though the shoulder armor appears to be slightly different from what I’ve observed.
Details about the Gundam movie thus far
Legendary Pictures announced the live-action Gundam movie back in 2018 at Anime Expo much to the shock and awe of fans of the timeless franchise. Since the movie’s initial announcement, it’s been a while since we’ve heard any news regarding its development. Thankfully Gundam enthusiasts can now breathe once again knowing that the movie’s alive and well.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts who previously directed Kong: Skull Island will serve as the director. He will also be directing the upcoming Metal Gear Solid movie. Comic book writer Brian K. Vaughan, best known for his work on Y: The Last Man and the highly praised sci-fi series Saga, will be laying the foundation for the film as its screenwriter.
The movie will be produced by Legendary Pictures’ Mary Parent and Cale Boyter, alongside Naohiroshi Ogata from studio Sunrise, the animation company that has produced most of the Gundam anime. While the concept art suggests that the movie will be based on the series’ original Universal Century continuity, Vogt-Roberts suggested that the movie will draw elements from multiple branches of the long-running mecha franchise.
“The movie may be an amalgamation of several of these different things, different timelines and what not,”
Vogt-Roberts told Entertainment Weekly last summer.
This new Gundam movie is Netflix’s latest investment in Bandai and Sunrise’s famous giant robot series. The latest Gundam animated movie, Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway, made its worldwide debut over the summer as a Netflix exclusive.
It serves as a direct sequel to 1988’s unanimously adored Char’s Counterattack, which is now also available for streaming through Netflix’s service, along with several other classic entries in the franchise. Hathaway was a critical and commercial success, becoming the second highest-grossing film in the franchise’s history.
A Brief History Of Mobile Suit Gundam
The Mobile Suit Gundam anime was created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, it made its debut in 1979 and quickly became one of the most influential anime franchises of all time. Gundam also served as a staple for the mecha genre. Mechas are essentially giant robots primarily used for fighting against giant monsters, aliens, or each other.
There’s something exciting and brilliant about seeing Giant robots brawl. There’s so much creativity and artistry encompassed in the mecha genre. Each battle represents the universal war of good versus evil and the enormity of mechas reflects the value of life and how much it’s worth saving.
